Symbl engineers microbiomes to simultaneously extract value from waste and reduce waste processing emissions.

Over 5B tonnes of municipal and industrial organic waste are produced every year

$200B/yr in processing and landfilling costs.

1B tonnes/yr of CO2 emissions.

$100B in bioproduct potential is trapped in these waste streams

Carbon and energy in organic waste could be transformed into valuable chemicals, liquid fuels, and bio-based materials.

We engineer microbiomes that thrive on organic waste

Microbial teamwork

Microbiomes are communities of diverse microorganisms that can complement and support each other. Any single microorganism is limited in its biological potential, but Symbl's microbiomes are engineered from the bottom up to convert complex organic waste into value added bioproducts.

With Symbl, organic waste producers are biomanufacturers.

Each tonne of organic waste costs $20-200+ to dispose of. With Symbl, our customers generate $millions/yr from their waste streams instead, and offset processing emissions by >70%.

Symbl microbiomes produce octanoic acid from waste

Disrupting palm supply

Symbl's first generation of microbiomes produce octanoic acid—a valuable, multifunctional ingredient used in food, personal care, agriculture and industry. Currently, octanoic acid has to be imported from palm and coconut oil sources. This supply is exposed to climate and geopolitical volatility, is increasingly expensive, and raises serious human rights and environmental concerns.
